
The governor and business officials expressed disappointment yesterday over the defeat of the land lease initiatives in the House of Representatives. The initiatives proposed longer lease terms for public and private lands in the Commonwealth. Had the initiatives passed the Legislature, they would have been placed on the ballot for ratification in the Nov. 3 election. “I am very disappointed that the indigenous people have been denied the right to decide how best to use their own land,” said Gov. Benigno R. Fitial. “At a critical time in our economic development, with our revenues and budget falling, we looked at these initiatives as a major way to stimulate investment and provide relief to the people.
